Plainfield Rd. Bridge Replacement over I-294 and Flagg Creek, Burr Ridge, Illinois

CLIENT: Illinois Tollway

Clark Dietz provided construction engineering services for the staged replacement of the Plainfield Road bridge over I-294 and Flagg Creek in Cook County. The project involved construction of a new three-span, two-lane bridge over 15 lanes of mainline I-294, Flagg Creek, and the ramps leading from I-55 to the Hinsdale Oasis.

The replacement bridge features semi-integral and vaulted abutments, a protected pedestrian sidewalk on one side, and a shared multiuse path for bicycles on the other. Work included new piers, mechanically stabilized earth (MSE) walls, and stainless-steel reinforcement for the bridge deck. Staged construction and maintenance of traffic supported travel through the project area during replacement.

Beyond the bridge, improvements included storm and sanitary sewer construction, drainage improvements, and relocation and replacement of a 12-inch water main in the Village of Burr Ridge. The water main work included a crossing beneath Plainfield Road within a 24-inch steel casing pipe.

Construction also included moment slabs, noise walls, retaining walls, guardrail, concrete barriers, pavement markings, signing, and permanent and temporary lighting. Work along Flagg Creek included creek realignment, revetment mat replacement, and permanent and temporary erosion control measures, including in-stream work.

Clark Dietz’s construction engineering assignment included oversight of performance specifications for noise abatement walls and a temporary soil retention system. Completed under Illinois Tollway Contract RR-20-4555, the improvements extended between mileposts 24.3 and 24.6 of the Tri-State Tollway, replacing the bridge and providing dedicated facilities for pedestrians and bicyclists.
