I-496 Eastbound and St. Joseph Highway/Main Street Bridges (Lansing, Michigan)

CLIENT: Michigan Department of Transportation-Central

Clark Dietz provided bridge design services for the reconstruction of two bridges along the I-496 corridor: the bridge carrying eastbound I-496 over the I-496 ramp to Lansing Road and the bridge carrying St. Joseph Highway/Main Street over I-496.

While both structures required deck replacement and substructure repairs, each had its own set of reconstruction needs. Clark Dietz developed plans that addressed the individual components of each bridge, from the roadway surface to the supports below.

I-496 Eastbound over Lansing Road Ramp

For the bridge carrying eastbound I-496 over the ramp to Lansing Road, the reconstruction plans called for replacement of the bridge deck, along with repairs or replacement of the barriers and deck joints. The design also included substructure repairs and repairs to the slope paving and protection beneath the bridge.

A silane treatment was included to help protect concrete surfaces from moisture and road salts.

St. Joseph Highway/Main Street over I-496

The plans for the St. Joseph Highway/Main Street bridge included deck replacement and deck joint repairs or replacement, as well as structural steel and substructure repairs. Partial structural steel painting and temporary supports were also included in the reconstruction plans.

Across the two bridges, the work included steel beam end repairs and pin and hanger repairs and replacements.

Clark Dietz completed services in 2020.
