M-39 & I-96 Interchange Bridge Scoping and Construction Phasing Analysis

CLIENT: Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT)

The I-96/M-39 interchange is a critical part of Metro Detroit’s transportation network, carrying significant traffic through one of Michigan’s most heavily traveled areas. To support the Michigan Department of Transportation’s long-term management of this infrastructure, the project team is evaluating 19 MDOT-owned bridge structures throughout the interchange and developing recommendations for their future preservation and rehabilitation.

As a subconsultant to HDR, Clark Dietz is providing specialized bridge scoping support focused on Maintenance of Traffic (MOT), mobility analysis, construction phasing, and asset management planning. The team is evaluating how future bridge work can be coordinated while maintaining mobility through the interchange and minimizing impacts to motorists.

The analysis will help establish a long-term asset management strategy for the interchange, allowing MDOT to strategically plan and sequence improvements over the next 40 years and beyond. By considering bridge condition, mobility needs, construction impacts, and future preservation together, the project will provide a framework for maintaining these critical transportation assets efficiently and effectively.
