Mattis Avenue Bridge Replacements over I-74 and I-57, Champaign Co., IL

In advance of the major reconstruction of the I-57/I-74 interchange in Champaign County, improvements were needed along Mattis Avenue to prepare the surrounding roadway network for the larger project. The existing cloverleaf interchange, originally designed in 1958 and constructed in 1965, connects two major interstate corridors serving the Champaign-Urbana area.

Clark Dietz provided construction engineering services for the Mattis Avenue improvements, which included replacing two bridges carrying Mattis Avenue over I-57 and I-74. Both existing bridges were removed and replaced using staged construction to accommodate traffic throughout the project. Work also included new roadway and shoulders, embankment, guardrail, and construction of the new bridge substructures and superstructures.

The project extended beyond the bridges themselves. Improvements were made to the City roadway sections adjacent to and between the structures, including HMA paving and intersection improvements at Anthony Drive and Bloomington Road. Drainage, lighting, and traffic signals were also improved as part of the work.

Throughout construction, Clark Dietz provided an experienced Liaison Engineer, inspection staff, testing equipment, and nighttime inspection when needed. Our team handled day-to-day construction engineering responsibilities, including on-site inspection, material testing, field measurements, layout and design changes, pay estimates, project documentation, and final contract records. The work also required close coordination with IDOT, the City, and utilities, including addressing an on-site profile correction across one of the bridges.

Clark Dietz also assisted IDOT staff with construction engineering needs for Bloomington Road over I-57 when additional support was requested.
