The Gordie Howe International Bridge

Major transportation projects do more than connect two destinations. They strengthen regional economies, improve mobility, and create safer connections for surrounding communities. The Gordie Howe International Bridge (GHIB) is one of North America’s largest infrastructure projects. It is creating a new international crossing between Windsor, Ontario, and Detroit, Michigan.
The project is being delivered for the Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority through a public-private partnership with Bridging North America. Bridging North America is a partnership of ACS Infrastructure, Fluor, and Aecon. Dragados Canada, Fluor, and Aecon are leading design and construction. AECOM is providing design oversight. Design of Clark Dietz’s bridge components was completed in 2022. Construction concluded in 2025.
The project also includes major improvements throughout Southwest Detroit. New pedestrian bridges improve local connectivity. Accessible sidewalks, protected bike facilities, decorative barriers, and a new greenway enhance safety and accessibility.
As part of the Bridging North America team, Clark Dietz provided structural engineering services for four bridges over I-75. Our team designed the Lansing Street and Junction Street pedestrian walkovers. We also designed the Livernois Avenue and Clark Avenue roadway bridges. The roadway bridges include separated pedestrian paths and bike lanes. Architectural treatments enhance both the function and appearance of each structure.
Clark Dietz also provided bridge load rating and construction assistance services. These services supported successful project delivery. Our work helped strengthen cross-border mobility, support trade, and create safer connections for residents, pedestrians, cyclists, and travelers.
