On July 12, 2024, Champaign City Officials, community leaders, and project stakeholders gathered for the groundbreaking ceremony marking the commencement of the Downtown Plaza project. Scheduled for completion in 2025, this phase promises to transform the heart of downtown into a vibrant hub for residents and visitors alike.

Clark Dietz has been instrumental in shaping the vision for the plaza improvements. The design incorporates a range of enhancements aimed at enhancing usability and aesthetic appeal while addressing infrastructure needs.

Key features of Clark Dietz’s design include the coordination and integration of a dynamic new stage element, strategically screening existing electrical equipment near Neil Street, and introducing specialty lighting to illuminate the plaza’s unique architectural features. Sidewalk improvements will facilitate smoother pedestrian flow, while reconfiguring the southern end of the parking lot aims to optimize access and functionality.

“We are thrilled to be part of this transformative project,” remarked Senior Vice President, Sean Widener, PE, PTOE, Project Lead at Clark Dietz. “Our multidisciplinary team has worked collaboratively with MKSK, whose thoughtful design emphasizes open, flexible spaces. Working with the City of Champaign representatives has been a seamless process, and their commitment to the project has ensured that our innovative design solutions prioritize functionality, community engagement, and connectivity. This project exemplifies the power of teamwork and a shared vision in creating a vibrant public space.”

In addition to physical improvements, the project includes strategic adjustments such as closing an existing access drive to Neil Street and establishing new pedestrian crosswalks to enhance safety and accessibility. These enhancements are designed not only to beautify the area but also to create a welcoming space for community events and gatherings.

In a City of Champaign press release, communications officials said, “The new Downtown Plaza will expand the appeal of Downtown Champaign to all ages and lifestyles, it will enhance the image of the community, and it will create a new space purposefully built to host special events.”

The groundbreaking ceremony marked a significant milestone in the project timeline, signaling the beginning of construction that will bring these visionary plans to life. The new and improved Downtown Plaza is poised to make a lasting impact on Champaign’s urban landscape.

As construction progresses, Clark Dietz remains committed to overseeing the project’s detailed design elements and ensuring seamless integration with existing infrastructure. The firm’s expertise in utility coordination and infrastructure management will play a crucial role in delivering a successful and sustainable urban space.
