Downtown Plaza Improvements, Champaign, Illinois

CLIENT: City of Champaign

The Downtown Plaza Improvements project is helping reshape a central gathering space in downtown Champaign into a more vibrant destination for community events, recreation, and everyday activity. Working with the City of Champaign and landscape architecture partner MKSK, Clark Dietz provided final design engineering services for the Immediate Phase of the project and preliminary design services for Phase 2.

Located along Neil Street between Main and Hill Streets, the plaza serves as an important public space within downtown Champaign. As part of the City’s vision for a more active and engaging downtown experience, the project balances placemaking enhancements with infrastructure improvements that support long-term functionality and growth.

Immediate Phase improvements included a new performance stage, pedestrian and sidewalk enhancements, specialty lighting, landscape modifications to create additional gathering space, parking and circulation improvements, and upgraded pedestrian crossings. Clark Dietz also led utility coordination, infrastructure investigations, and construction cost development to support implementation of the project.

Building on those improvements, Phase 2 will further transform the plaza and surrounding streetscape through drainage improvements along Washington and Neil Streets, roadway reconstruction, and redevelopment of the northern portion of the plaza. Planned features include dedicated walkways, expanded gathering spaces, landscaped planters, seating areas, a fountain and splash pad, and other interactive elements designed to encourage year-round use.

The project demonstrates how thoughtful planning, engineering, and placemaking can work together to create a public space that supports community life while strengthening the downtown experience for residents and visitors alike.
