Arc Flash Hazard Planning and Analysis
Clark Dietz has extensive experience with planning and analysis throughout the United States and Canada. Our approach to any arc flash analysis project is to bring together field investigations and data collection, arc analysis, electrical systems designs and analysis, and electrical safety training to create one cohesive solution. Field Data Collection
- Field data collection by qualified personnel (as defined by NFPA 70E)
- Verify installed condition of one-line diagrams
- Determine feeder conductor lengths
- Confirm feeder conductor sizes
- Document size, manufacturer, and settings of relays, circuit breakers and fuses
- Document primary and secondary voltages, and kVA and impedance ratings of transformers
- Keep a running list of Code-related items, safety issues, equipment condition deficiencies, and maintenance items observed while collecting field data
Arc Flash Study and Analysis
- Data entry and system one-line modeling using SKM Power Tools software
- Coordination with electric utility regarding available fault current on each component
- Short circuit and equipment duty verification study to determine whether electrical equipment is properly rated to withstand and interrupt available short circuit duty per ANSI Standards and NEMA/UL/NEC requirements
- Selective coordination study: time current curves with recommendations of trip settings, relay settings, and fuse types and sizes
- Perform studies to determine maximum incident energies, boundaries, and PPE requirements for each required component in the system. Study results can be integrated with 70E compliant work permits as part of an ongoing safety program
- System upgrade recommendations and actions for corrective measures
Analysis and procedures shall comply with the following standards and recommended practices for power system studies:
Our Arc Flash Analysis Leader
Paul passes on his knowledge to others through worksite training and finds it important to emphasize that arc flash is a hazard for all people that are exposed to live electrical equipment, not just electricians.
