College Avenue Bridge over North Branch Sugar Creek

Normal, IL

The Town of Normal selected Clark Dietz to design a replacement bridge for College Avenue over the North Branch of Sugar Creek. This structure is a single span prestressed concrete deck beam bridge with a 5-inch wearing surface, an overall length of 71′-5″ and width of 63′-0″. The deck features 5′-0″ sidewalks shielded by form-lined parapets and ornamental painted galvanized railings. The bridge also facilitates a telephone duct bank carried by black painted steel beams supported on the abutments adjacent to the bridge superstructure. To minimize impact on buried utilities, drilled shafts were used to support the abutments instead of driven piles. The bridge type and length were selected to provide the necessary hydraulic opening while minimizing costs and providing an enhanced aesthetic.
