Spring Street Rehabilitation over Silver Creek (Floyd County Bridge #70)
CLIENT: Floyd County, IN
The Spring Street Bridge has connected New Albany and Clarksville for nearly 100 years. The rehabilitation of the historic structure improved safety, increased its load capacity, and extended its service life, while preserving its historic character.
Owned by the Floyd County and Clark County Commissioners in Indiana, the bridge carries Spring Street over Silver Creek between Floyd and Clark counties. Built in 1926, the reinforced concrete open spandrel arch bridge is considered eligible for the National Register of Historic Places because of its engineering significance.
The rehabilitation project included replacing the entire bridge deck and widening the roadway to better accommodate traffic. Additional improvements included replacing the floor beams, stringers, and deteriorated columns. Every improvement was carefully designed to preserve the bridge’s original appearance while extending its service life.
Clark Dietz provided bridge design and construction inspection services for the project. Our team designed a new floor system and analyzed how it would perform with both the new columns and the existing arch rings. This approach allowed the bridge to meet modern transportation needs while maintaining the character of the original structure.
By balancing historic preservation with modern engineering, the project ensures the Spring Street Bridge will continue serving residents and visitors while preserving an important piece of Southern Indiana’s transportation history.
