Longmeadow Parkway (Contract C3) IL 25 Improvements

CLIENT: Kane County, IL

Clark Dietz provided professional construction engineering services to the Kane County Division of Transportation (KDOT) for the construction of a new intersection connecting Longmeadow Parkway to IL 25 in the Village of Carpentersville. The improvements included a fully signalized intersection and a connection to the western terminus of IL 25 to IL 62.

Project Overview:

  • Project Scope:

    • Longmeadow Parkway is a new four-lane arterial highway, offering an additional crossing over the Fox River.

    • IL 25 is a rural highway with daily traffic approaching 17,000 vehicles.

    • Improvements involved tree removal, earthwork and grading, pavement, an enclosed drainage system, water main installation, soldier pile retaining walls, traffic signal infrastructure, signage, landscaping, and final pavement markings.

  • Funding:

    • The project was federally funded through STP (Surface Transportation Program) and CMAQ (Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality) funds.

  • Challenges:

    • The project was located adjacent to farmland, requiring careful consideration of farm boundaries to minimize any adverse impacts on landowners and operators.

Construction Engineering and Observation Services:

Clark Dietz provided the following construction engineering services:

  • Utilities Coordination: Ensuring all utility services were properly managed and relocated.

  • Layout Verification: Verifying the construction layout to ensure accuracy.

  • Materials Testing: Testing construction materials to ensure they met standards.

  • Traffic Control Inspection: Monitoring traffic control measures to ensure safety and compliance.

  • Documentation: Handling all necessary project documentation.

  • Contractor Pay Estimates: Processing and reviewing contractor pay estimates.

  • Coordination: Organizing regular meetings with the contractor, KDOT, IDOT, and local municipalities to ensure smooth communication.

  • As-built Drawings: Preparing final as-built drawings of the project.

IL 25 and Longmeadow Parkway Improvements:

Kane County Division of Transportation (KDOT) selected Clark Dietz for Phase III Construction Observation Engineering Services for the Longmeadow Parkway at IL 25 project. The project involved reconstructing IL 25 to create a new intersection with Longmeadow Parkway, spanning the Village of Algonquin, Carpentersville, Dundee Township, and unincorporated Kane County.

  • Project Details:

    • IL 25: A four-lane roadway with an Average Daily Traffic (ADT) of 17,300 vehicles.

    • Length of Improvements: Approximately 2.77 miles.

    • New Pavement: 10-inch PCC jointed pavement.

    • Pavement Sequencing: Construction will occur in stages to allow one lane of traffic in each direction.

    • Accessibility: Existing side streets and driveways will be reconstructed but will remain accessible throughout the project.

    • Drainage System: An enclosed drainage system will be installed on both sides of IL 25.

    • Multi-use Path: A multi-use path will be constructed along IL 25 from Cherokee Road to Silverstone Drive.

    • Raising Road Profile: The road profile will be raised approximately one foot at Cherokee Road and Bolz Road.

    • Utility Relocation: Utility relocation is required before construction on IL 25 can begin.

    • Clearing and Grading: Required for the construction of the new four-lane PCC pavement section of Longmeadow Parkway.

    • Drainage System: An enclosed drainage system will be installed along the north side of Longmeadow Parkway.

    • Coordination: The construction process will need coordination with other adjacent Longmeadow Parkway Corridor contracts.

Project Budget: The cost of the intersection improvement was $5.6 million.
