The Gordie Howe International Bridge Project | I-75 Bridges
As part of the Gordie Howe International Bridge (GHIB) project, Clark Dietz provided structural engineering services for four bridges over I-75 in Southwest Detroit: the Lansing Street and Junction Street pedestrian walkovers and the Livernois Avenue and Clark Avenue roadway bridges.
Each structure plays a role in reconnecting neighborhoods and supporting multimodal travel around the new international crossing. The Livernois Avenue and Clark Avenue bridges carry vehicular traffic while providing separated paths for pedestrians and cyclists. The Lansing Street and Junction Street walkovers create dedicated pedestrian connections across I-75. Architectural treatments were incorporated into all four structures to complement the surrounding improvements.
Structural Design and Load Rating
Clark Dietz provided bridge design and load rating services for all four structures. The team developed structural designs that addressed the requirements of each crossing while coordinating with the larger roadway, pedestrian, and architectural improvements taking place throughout the corridor.
Design of Clark Dietz’s bridge components was completed in 2022. Our team continued supporting the project through construction, providing construction assistance services as the structures moved from design into the field.
Clark Dietz performed Bridge Design, Bridge Load Rating, and Construction Assistance services.
Part of a Larger International Infrastructure Project
The four I-75 bridges are part of the larger Gordie Howe International Bridge project, a major new international crossing connecting Detroit, Michigan, and Windsor, Ontario.
The project includes the cable-stayed international bridge, Canadian and U.S. Ports of Entry, and the Michigan Interchange connecting the U.S. Port of Entry with I-75. Improvements in Southwest Detroit also include new and reconstructed road bridges, pedestrian bridges, accessible sidewalks, bicycle facilities, landscaping, and other infrastructure intended to improve connections within the surrounding community.
The project was delivered for the Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority through a public-private partnership with Bridging North America. Clark Dietz served as part of the project team under AECOM, which led design.
