Description

Clark Dietz was retained to design a 6 MG ground storage tank and a control building to stabilize system pressures for current residents and to accommodate future growth on the east side of the City of Madison. The reservoir was designed to limit the visual impact on neighboring residents. The tank was positioned behind existing trees to reduce the visual profile, and split-faced CMU pilasters were installed on the tank to improve aesthetics. The landscaping around the tank includes new trees and prairie grasses.

Clark Dietz was very involved in working with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources and the City of Madison Planning and Zoning Department to satisfy the permit requirements for the project. Items such as a stormwater and erosion control plan, a landscaping plan, and architectural renderings were prepared and submitted for the City's review and approval. Clark Dietz also assisted the Water Utility by attending public hearings for the project and by coordinating with the Dane County Airport.

Highlights

The Madison Water Utility had established an aggressive design and construction schedule for the reservoir and control building. Clark Dietz was awarded the project in February of 2006 and the Utility wanted to put the reservoir online by June of 2007. To meet the Utility's schedule, the design was completed in April 2006. The construction contract for the reservoir was awarded in May 2006, allowing the contractor approximately 12 months to complete the project. The contract for the control building was awarded in February of 2007, with construction to be completed in June 2007.
